Novak Djokovic will be looking to defend his title as the 2013 Shanghai Masters gets underway, the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season. Djokovic is one of the best hard-court players in the world both indoors and outdoors as he’s shown with his success at the Australian Open and the World Tour Finals over the years.

He hasn’t always been at his best in Asia, losing to Roger Federer in straight sets in the 2011 Shanghai Masters semi-finals but last year, he finally brought his A game to the tournament, winning it for the first time. In doing so, Djokovic became the first man to win seven of the nine Masters 1000 events and moving within touching distance of completing the full set.

He did not have it all his own way and Andy Murray will look back at the 2012 Shanghai Masters and think that he should have won the tournament for a third straight time. He served for the match against Djokovic and held two match points but was unable to take his chances and slipped to a three set defeat.

Murray will once again head into the tournament as one of the favourites as he looks to challenge Djokovic for the world number one ranking over the next six months. He has enjoyed a fantastic season, making the Australian Open final and then winning Wimbledon for the first time. He’s grown as an athlete under the guidance of Ivan Lendl and will take some stopping this week. Fans will surely be hoping for yet another edition of the already compelling Murray-Djokovic rivalry in the final.

With the season winding to a close after Shanghai, competition for the end of season World Tour Finals is already starting to hot up by the time the tournament gets underway. Stanislas Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, Tommy Haas and Nicolas Almagro all still have a chance of booking a place in the top eight and they will be looking to bounce out one of the established names.

Rafael Nadal has never done well at the Shanghai Masters and the Spaniard will be looking to improve on that this year. He suffered surprise losses to Jurgen Melzer and Florian Mayer in 2010 and 2011 and after watching him crash out in the first round of Wimbledon this year, the lower ranked players will all have plenty of belief that they can send him packing.
